Thai Airways to start flying to 'gateway of Tibet' BANGKOK, Nov 28 (AFP) - Thai Airways International will begin flying to the western Chinese province of Chengdu from January 2002, a company statement said Wednesday. "Chengdu has become a gateway into Tibet which has become widely popular among travellers from Europe and America," it said. The flights would depart the Thai capital of Bangkok for Chengdu three times a week, starting January 1, and were expected to increase passenger travel on the flag carrier by seven percent, it said. Chengdu was also a popular destination for Japanese and Thai tourists who were drawn to the panda sanctuary there, the statement said. |
