Tendulkar sanctioned for cleaning ball, not tampering LONDON, Nov 29 (Reuters) Sachin Tendulkar, India's leading cricketer, was disciplined nine days ago for cleaning the ball without the umpire's permission rather than ball tampering, the International Cricket Council (ICC) said on Thursday. "It's still an offence but it's not as serious as ball tampering," said ICC spokesman Mark Harrison. Tendulkar was one of six players sanctioned by match referee Mike Denness in the second test against South Africa. The suspended one-match ban on Tendulkar sparked outrage in India, where he is revered as a national hero. India consequently refused to accept Denness as the match referee for the third test which was then declared unofficial by the ICC. The crisis has escalated since, with the Indian board being given until 0630GMT on Friday to say whether or not suspended batsman Virender Sehwag will play in the first test against England starting next Monday in Mohali. |
