Emirates signs MoU with Australian Uni for security training

Emirates is expanding its comprehensive aviation training base in the UAE to include accredited programs in Security, designed to raise professional standards both within the company itself and in the region in general.

Emirates' Chairman, HH Sheikh Ahmed bin Saeed Al-Maktoum, signed a Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) recently for the new faculty with Professor John Wood, Pro Vice-Chancellor, Edith Cowan University, Perth, Western Australia.

Sheikh Ahmed said: "We are very pleased to be entering into this partnership with such a prestigious academy as the Edith Cowan University.

"Emirates is very proud of its Security department, whose training section is one of the best of any airline in the world. This new venture is the most ambitious it has ever undertaken, but I'm sure it will be successful and of mutual benefit."

Training will commence in 2002 at the Dubai Aviation College, now part of the Emirates Training College, and will be open for both Emirates and other airlines and organisations within the Gulf/ Middle East region.

The accredited training programs will entail training in conflict management and crisis resolution such as hijacking situations and will include comprehensive study of fraud, international aviation law, and various other security modules. Professor Wood said: "Emirates is committed to making Dubai the centre of education and training in the aviation industry in the Middle East.

"We are pleased to be part of that commitment, which will ensure that in the future, Emirates will truly be the centre of excellence for aviation training."

The signing of the MoU was the culmination of 12 months' work by Emirates' Security department, in dialogue with the Faculty of Business and Public Management of Edith Cowan University and the Emirates Training College.

Abdulla Al Hashimi, Chief of Emirates' Group Security said they shared the same vision as their counterparts at Edith Cowan University. "Our remit is to raise the profile of Dubai, and it is our quest to be the best with regard to Security Training, which will further raise the standards of the Emirates Training College to a new domain."

Emirates Group Security has long been an industry leader in the development of systems and procedures to combat fraud. Based in Dubai, the division has achieved significant success through document verification, the forensic examination of counterfeit documents and the development of training programs.
