Jaffna District wins cricket triangular

Jaffna District beat Vavuniya District by 90 runs to win the final of the North East Inter-District Triangular Cricket Tournament 2001, which was held at Jaffna Central College grounds recently.

Despite losing seven wickets for only 101 after winning the toss and electing to bat, Jaffna recovered to total 184 all out in 49 overs, with T. Gowribagan scoring 28 and R. Sarjahan 25. In reply, Vavuniya were all out for 94 in 30.5 overs.

The triangular tournament, which also featured Batticaloa District, was organized by the Jaffna District Cricket Association and sponsored by the National Development Centre of the Board of Control for Cricket in Sri Lanka.

The President of the Jaffna District School Cricket Association S. Rajathurai, who is also the Principal of Jaffna Central College, was the Chief Guest. The Guest of Honour was S. Balakrishnan, former Secretary of the Jaffna District Schools Cricket Association.

Awards were distributed by V. S. Balachandran of V.S.B. Group S. Nagaratnam of E. S. Perambalam and Co., and Reginold of Lavanyas, are the sponsors of cricket in Jaffna. Also present was S. P. Rajievan, Co-ordinator of the Jaffna District Cricket Association.

JDCA officials thanked the BCCSL for its sponsorship, and the Principal of Jaffna Central College, Jaffna College Vaddukottai, and St. John's College for offering their grounds. St. John's College Jaffna provided accommodation for the visiting teams.

This tournament was first held in 1999, when Jaffna, Batticaloa, Trincomalee and Vavuniya Districts participated, with Batticaloa District winning the tournament.
