Rajaratnam in Nuwara Eliya A prominent candidate was shocked and dismayed when his hired pick-up lorry with mikes fitted on was seen in another rival camp for a mere hundred rupees more on hire per day during the election campaign. An even sadder thing was that he has also taken the furniture, posters and notices which were in the candidates election office. However, a free for all was averted between the driver and the party supporters. In another incident, a van belonging to UNP candidate P. Chandrasekeran went down a precipice near the Mahatma Gandhi Memorial Hall causing heavy damage to the vehicle. The injured campaigners were hospitalised. The policemen who are deployed to remove posters in the hills and plantation areas make apologetic pleas to party supporters not to paste the notices too prominently along the available entire space but paste them here and there as a goodwill gesture without causing much embarrassment to the law enforcing men and party supporters who are always in good spirit.
