Face to Face

Arrest me - Jayalath Jayawardena

I categorically deny that the voice contained in the tape is mine. This is a baseless, shameless and a criminal act by the Government to which is fighting a desperate bid to cling on to power that is fast slipping from it grasp.

I have been accused of being an LTTEer since 1998 by no less a person than the President and I have urged the Police to arrest me and even bodily presented myself before the law enforcement authorities quoting arrest. But they declined.

This is the work of Mangala Samaraweera. I request him to provide the time, the place, when, where and who did the tape recording and telephone number involved.

Since he (Mangala) is taking responsibility for his statement, it is his duty to provide these details. Similarly, the letter purportedly written by me does not have a date, rubber stamp, my name or signature. Although the writing is similar to mine the letter is a fake.

This was purportedly written in 1998. Now why did the Government wait all these time when they could have easily arrested me under the PTA or emergency regulations if I had links with the LTTE.

The press conference was given by two PA candidates contesting the elections using the Government Information Department auditorium is clear violation of the election law.

I asked the Director of Information Ariya Rubasinghe to grant me the same venue to counter this allegation. But so far I have not received any response.

Trying to be a cardboard hero - D. M. Jayaratne

Jayalath Jayawardane, smelling that he will be rejected at the forthcoming election is now challenging the IGP to arrest him. The IGP will act at the correct time after investigations.

He is trying to be a cardboard hero. He wants the police to arrest him in order to build his image as a hero and get his votes increased. But we are not a foolish government to give him a image building kick as he expects, now.

Certainly we will take action against him on the charges of treason. Some politicians want them to get behind bars, at least for ten minutes, because that help them to build their image.

We will prove that he had had talks with an LTTE member and his connection with the LTTE, as well. He earlier denied the fact that he went into LTTE held areas and have had talks with the LTTE leaders. He said that he only conducted a health camp in these areas.

But we proved that he met LTTE leaders by publishing a picture of him with LTTE policemen when he visited the Mahaweera LTTE cemetery in Thunukkai.

He is one of the MPs who participated LTTE international conference. We have enough evidence to prove that he is an LTTE sympathiser or a rather a propagandist. We will do it at the correct time.

The IGP will take proper action at the proper time. One thing is sure, that we will not make him a cardboard hero.
