News Business Features Editorial Security Politics World Letters Sports Obituaries | Ravi goes to court against JVP, SLRC and ITN by Wasantha Ramanayake Former parliamentarian Ravi Karunanayake filed cases before Colombo District Court against former Janatha Vimukthi Peramuna (JVP) parliamentary group leader Wimal Weerawansa, former JVP parliamentarian Sunil Hadunnetti, Sri Lanka Rupavahini Corporation (SLRC) and Independent Television Network Ltd (ITN). Plaintiff Karunanayake has filed the four actions for allegedly defaming him and claimed Rs. 500 million as damages from each defendant. Plaintiff claimed that he obtained the second largest preference votes in the general election held in the year 2000. He alleged that a statement made in an interview given by Sunil Hadunnetti which were telecast by SLRC and ITN on October 14 was defamatory of the plaintiff. He also alleged that press release issued by defendant Wimal Weerawansa which was published in the Daily News dated October 15 was also defamatory of him. G.G. Arulpragasam, Attorney-at-Law filed the plaints.
