When the President started her speech around 7.30 p.m. there were two electricity failures at the centre possibly due to sabotage. The organisers of the meeting soon installed a generator they had kept ready to enable the vast crowd to listen to the President's speech in full. However, immediately after the speech there was a loud explosion on the roof of the building which brought down a few asbestos sheets. Police intervened to control the tension among the crowd and restored normalcy. No one was hurt in the explosion. A suspect believed to be a UNP supporter was taken into custody by the Kekirawa police in this connection. He was due to be produced in court yesterday (November 22).
