Futile attempt to disperse PA crowd

by Chula Bandara Kulasekara and Shantha Weeramuni in Anuradhapura

When President Chandrika Bandaranaike Kumaratunga addressed the people of Kekirawa through a satellite link on Wednesday night UNP thugs made a futile attempt to prevent over 1,000 people who had gathered at the Kekirawa Cultural Centre from listening to her speech.

When the President started her speech around 7.30 p.m. there were two electricity failures at the centre possibly due to sabotage. The organisers of the meeting soon installed a generator they had kept ready to enable the vast crowd to listen to the President's speech in full.

However, immediately after the speech there was a loud explosion on the roof of the building which brought down a few asbestos sheets. Police intervened to control the tension among the crowd and restored normalcy. No one was hurt in the explosion.

A suspect believed to be a UNP supporter was taken into custody by the Kekirawa police in this connection. He was due to be produced in court yesterday (November 22).
