Jayalath Jayawardena could be charged for treason - Anura Bandaranaike

Former Speaker Anura Bandaranaike said yesterday that the Government should take immediate steps against the alleged conspiracy by Dr. Jayalath Jayawardena who has allegedly had a telephone conversation with a person connected to the LTTE.

Details that have transpired from this alleged conversation tantamount to treason and criminal conspiracy, he told a meeting at Ganemulla, Gampaha.

Bandaranaike said that this was an issue relating to the security of the State and should not be taken lightly.

On one hand they have planned to rig votes at the election while on the other, they have planned to adopt a ten pronged strategy with the LTTE, he said.

He said that in his opinion, legal action could be taken against Mr. Jayawardena under charges of treason as his statements could be a possible threat to national security which has been enshrined in the Constitution.

Minister Mangala Samaraweera at a press conference in Colombo replayed a audio tape that contained the voice of Dr. Jayawardena while also displaying to the media a photocopy of a letter sent by Dr. Jayawardena to Thamil Chelvam.

Dr. Jayawardena has not denied that the handwriting in the letter was his.
