Anaesthetist guilty of sexual abuse

An anaesthetist of a hospital in Matale was sent on compulsory retirement by the Health Ministry this week after he was found guilty of sexually abusing a female patient.

The woman to whom he had administered a sedative was partly conscious at the time of the incident and had screamed. Members of the hospital staff had rushed to her assistance." Since charges against him were proved, the Ministry decided to send him on compulsory retirement." a Senior Ministry official aid.

The Ministry's decision has already been conveyed to the Public Service Commission for further action.

Meanwhile, the Ministry's Special Investigation Division has commenced another inquiry into another incident where a female cancer patient is alleged to have been sexually abused at the Peradeniya Teaching Hospital by a male attendant." Already, the Hospital Director has commenced an initial inquiry," an official said.

Cheating case put off

A peon of the Presidential Secretariat, suspect in several cheating cases was directed to appear in court after four months by the Kandy Magistrate, D.L.M. Seneviratne on Tuesday.

The suspect, A. Sunil Siriwardene of Siyambalawala, Ruwanwella was arrested on a complaint made to the CID by a senior assistant secretary of the Presidential Secretariat.

According to the CID, the suspect is alleged to have collected over Rs. 500,000 from 16 young men and women in the Menikhinna area promising them overseas employment and Swarnabhoomi land and defaulted later.

When the case was taken up, the prosecuting officer told court that six documents including two receipts alleged to have been signed on Rs. 50 and Rs. 5 stamps by the suspect and English and Sinhala specimen signatures of the suspect had been forwarded to the Examiner of Questioned Documents and he had not forwarded his report to court.

The Magistrate put off the case for March 4 and directed the suspect to appear in court on that date.

Father and son acquitted

A sixty-five year old man and his 35 year old son, who were indicted with the murder of a 20-year-old spinster, were acquitted by Sisira de Abrew, High Court Judge, Kandy when they were found not guilty after trial without jury.

M.B. Ratnanayake and M.B. Samaranayake of Metibemiya were indicted with committing the murder of L.M. Lokku Menike by strangling her on October 8, 1981 at Metibemiya, Maturata.

The trial lasted several days and the evidence of 14 witnesses including the father of the deceased Lokku Menike, Examiner of Questioned Documents, Dr. P.H. Rajapaksa former JMO Kandy and Inspector H.M.S. Mahagedera were led and 22 productions were marked by several state counsel.

All the witnesses were cross examined by senior defence counsel Wijaya Wickremaratne PC, who appeared for the accused with Piyasiri Abeykoon, Hirantha Herath and Mrs. Dhammika Ariyadasa.

The trial judge having considered the totality of the evidence and submissions of the state and defence counsel decided that the evidence in the case was unsatisfactory and acquitted both accused.

Heart patients invited for discussion

Heart patients in Colombo district are invited for a discussion on their medical problems at the Asha Central Hospital, Colombo, on Sunday (tomorrow) at 10 a.m.

The Medical panel at this discussion arranged by the Health Watch (Daily News Medical Page) will comprise consultant cardiologist Dr. Mohan Jayatilleke, Dr. D. P. Atukorale, cardiac surgeon Dr. L. Dalpadadu. consultant neurologist and sports medicine unit head Dr. Githanjan Mendis family physician, and visiting lecturer PGIM Dr. Dennis J. Aloysius and health watch SPC centenarian study project medical officer Dr. Viraj Peramuna.

The medical panel requests the patients to write down the problems they are interested in getting discussed when they come for the meeting.
