A multi-storeyed vehicle park will be constructed shortly in Kandy as a solution to ease the existing traffic congestion in this main city in the Central Hills. This project which is estimated to cost Rs 500 million which will be built on a site where the former Wales Cinema Theatre and the Municipal Workshop was located adjacent to the D.S. Senanayake Memorial Public Library. construction of the park which will have 883 parking spaces will commence in April 2002. Eighty per cent funding for this project will be obtained through an ADB grant while the balance 20 per cent on a loan repayable over 14 years. The design consultants have already submitted the final feasibility report and the designs according to which, measure will be taken to ease the traffic congestion in the city by the formulation of suitable traffic plan too. The need for a stream line traffic system and parking in Kandy has been a long-felt need and the Municipal Council has seized the opportunity along with the Urban Development Authority to provide this new facility. In the next stage, the Council has designed to have a 800 seat auditorium, an exhibition centre and gallery and 250 seat cinema hall on top of the multi-storeyed vehicle park. |
