by Gamini Rupananda The goals of the Sarvodaya Movement are not easily achieved, and those who strive to attain them must receive recognition, the former Vice President of the International Court of Justice, Justice C. G. Weeramantri said at the Sarvodaya Trust Fund's annual awards ceremony on November 11. Mr. Weeramantri who was chief guest said the movement's set goals for creating a new dawn of re-awakening for all citizens, respect for all, and the well-being of all, called for effort in many directions, spiritual, moral, cultural, social and political. Dr. A. T. Ariyaratne, Chairman, Sarvodaya Trust Fund explained that the Sarvodaya Trust Fund for the Advancement of Humanity, Development and Peace was established by Trust Deed and subsequently by Parliamentary Act No. 31 of 1948 to reward persons or organisations working for the Advancement of Humanity, Development and Peace and for Promoting the achievement of Sarvodaya objectives. We are living in times where a rapid degeneration of humanity, development and peace in our societies is taking place. Still, there are a few among us who are struggling and making sacrifices to reverse this trend. We are fortunate that five among such persons have been selected to receive Sarvodaya awards, this year." This year's award recipients were Ayurvedic Dr. Deshabandu Victor Hettigoda, the Ven. Dr. Welamitiyawe Kusaladhamma Nayaka Thera, Kalasuri Dr. Chitrasena, Kalasuri Titus Thotawatte and Rev. Fr. Mervyn Fernando.
