Rs. 9b. private hospital projects by Bharatha Malawaraarachchi Negotiations are under way for ten more BOI approved private hospitals in Colombo and its outskirts bringing the total number of private hospitals commissioned and to be commissioned soon to seventeen at an overall cost of nearly Rs. 9 billion. The investments are both local and joint foreign collaborations. "Four of these hospitals are already operational while another three are under construction. The investment in the seven projects is estimated at over Rs two billion, Dr. A. Harsha de Silva, Director of Private Health Sector Development in the Health Ministry told the Daily News yesterday. The bed capacity of the completed hospitals is 1200." The new hospitals are equipped with all modern technological facilities, he added. The Government had provided several incentives for setting up private hospitals such as duty free import of medical equipment. Many of the balance 10 hospitals, are awaiting formal signing of agreements. Dr. de Silva explained that these hospitals will be financed throught direct local investments and joint collaborations between Indian, Australian, German and Singaporean investors. Meanwhile, the Health Ministry has also embarked on a program to upgrade a selected base hospital in every district as a fully-fledged hospital in a bid to ensure an efficient service in the state health sector. |
