India has big brother attitude towards Bangladesh: MP

DHAKA, Nov 18 (AFP) - A lawmaker of Bangladesh's governing coalition told parliament Monday that India had a dangerous "big brother" attitude towards Bangladesh as fresh border shootout was reported.

"India adopted a big brotherly attitude towards Bangladesh and the government must take necessary steps to protect the country's sovereignity," fundamentalist Jamaat-e-Islami MP Shah Ruhul Quddus said.

Jamaat has two cabinet ministers in Prime Minister Khaleda Zia's ruling Bangladesh Nationalist Party (BNP) four-party Islamist-allied government.

Quddus said India's security forces regularly attacked Bangladeshi civilians as well as security personnel.

"The India border security force is often resorting to attack on Bangladeshi nationals as well as on the BDR (Bangladesh Rifles) border guards," the MP said.

His comments came after seven Bangladeshi nationals were killed by Indian border guards over the weekend, because they were trying to cross the border illegally, according to Indian officials.

The private Ekushey Television network reported Tuesday that two Bangladeshis were injured after Indian border troops opened fire in northeastern Sylhet district's Jayantapur area.

The trouble started over a piece of rice of paddy field, it said.

No other details were immediately available.

India and Bangladesh share a 4,000-kilometre (2,500-mile) border, of which 6.5 kilometres (four miles) is still to be officially demarcated.

A border clash in April between the two usually friendly neighbours killed 16 Indian troops and three Bangladeshi border guards.
