England batsmen get top marks, bowlers set more work BOMBAY, Tuesday (Reuters) - England coach Duncan Fletcher praised his batsmen after the opening game of their India tour but warned the bowlers to expect more homework before they acclimatised to local conditions. All of England's batsmen got starts against a Bombay President's XI on Monday, with all-rounder Craig White top-scoring with 79 not out and opener Marcus Trescothick, skipper Nasser Hussain and Mark Ramprakash also hitting half-centuries. "Five of the top six batters who are going to make the runs in the test series got out there and batted very, very well," Fletcher told reporters after the drawn two-day game. "It was very hot and humid and you must give a lot of credit to the English side to fly out from England and stick to the task like they did yesterday." Fletcher said some players including Trescothick had complained of fatigue on Sunday night after spending their first full day in the heat and humidity of Bombay. "The heat and humidity just drained them," he said. But Fletcher said his bowlers faced a lot of work ahead of the three-test series starting on December 3. "Our bowlers yesterday realised wickets out here are not easy," he said after the Bombay XI amassed 373 for five on Sunday. "You've got to work hard, got to be disciplined and they realise now what is expected of them for the remainder of the tour." |
