India's Sachin Tendulkar must wait until Tuesday to hear whether he will be punished following ball-tampering claims during the Port Elizabeth Test.

A spokesman for the International Cricket Council confirmed that Tendulkar had been questioned by match referee Mike Denness with regard to an allegation of "changing the condition of the ball".

Television pictures captured images of him allegedly using his fingernails to interfere with the seam of the ball on Sunday.

Denness, the former England captain, summoned Tendulkar to a meeting after viewing video footage.

And the chief executive of the United Cricket Board of South Africa, Gerald Majola, said Denness would announce his decision on Tuesday.

But Tendukar told India's Telegraph newspaper that he was surprised by the claims.

"After having played international cricket for 12 years, I do know what is right and what is wrong," he was quoted as saying.

Three other Indian players, Virender Sehwag, Harbhajan Singh and Shiv Sunder Das also appeared before Denness on a charge of excessive appealing.
