Police unable to identify whether youth have Tiger connections

The high powered police team conducting investigations into the arrest of 27 Tamil youth from the Jaffna district at a lodging house at Weragama, Wadduwa on Friday were unable to identify whether they were terrorist suspects brought to Wadduwa to commit mischief in the Kalutara area. All the suspects possessed national Identity Cards.

The police questioned the former private secretary of Western Province Chief Minister Regonald Cooray and recorded his statement regarding the matter under investigation. The owner of the lodge Anton Fernando and a sub agent of a Foreign Employment agency were also arrested and their statements recorded.

These two men were in custody pending investigations and the ex private secretary of the chief minister was released after his statement was recorded.

The investigations conducted so far revealed that a sub agent of a foreign employment agency in Colombo had brought the 27 Tamil youth to Wadduwa to be sent to Italy by sea transport through an agent in the Negombo area. The youth were to be kept in a safe house at Weragama, Wadduwa till the sub agent gets a call from the main agent in Negombo.

The Wadduwa police took into custody the owner of the house where the 27 Tamil youth were lodging .

Police also found Rs. 93,000, food items and a video deck but no other documents connected to the LTTE, such as literature the suspects were kept at the Wadduwa police for further investigations.

The Anti Terrorist Unit, special unit of the Mt. Lavinia police, the CID assisted by the Wadduwa police are investigating on the directions of Jayantha Wickramratne, DIG Colombo South on the supervision of Panadura Division SP Kithsiri Dayananda with ASP Sanjeewa Dharmaratne.
