Jaffna UNP candidate from Maha Viru

by Uditha Kumarasinghe

JVP Propaganda Secretary Wimal Weerawansa yesterday said that the Jaffna district UNP candidates list comprised four new candidates who had close links with the LTTE. The families of these candidates have been named as " Maha Viru Families" by the LTTE.

Gopal Pille Jeyanandan, Thagarasa Selvarasa, Muttukumar Sivabalan and Sinnathammbi Kanagathipillei were the four LTTE related candidates nominated by the UNP to contest for the Jaffna, he said.

Addressing a news conference in Colombo, Mr. Weerawansa said former UNP MP Maheshwaran who contested Jaffna under number 4 had distributed a document in the Jaffna area emphasising that the LTTE should be accepted as the sole representative of the Tamil community.

"The document states that through the representation they gained in Jaffna, they would force the Sinhala community, Sinhala MPs and Buddhist religious dignitaries to lift the ban on the LTTE imposed by foreign governments. In addition, the Jaffna land route should be reopened and the Armed Forces should be moved from the centre of Jaffna city, to the South of Sri Lanka.

Weerawansa said Maheshwaran's statement also mentioned initiatives that should be taken to arrest the EPDP Leader Douglas Devananda and 400 of his members. This shows that the UNP has agreed to settle the problem the LTTE has with the EPDP and is a clear indication of the secret Ali-Koti agreement between the UNP and the LTTE. "Therefore, we challenge the UNP to make an open statement regarding the facts included to this document," he challenged.

Each vote gained by this unholy alliance would lead to a division of the country. "The JVP requests the people to act to defeat this unholy alliance," he said.

Former TELO MP Srikanthan had also said the LTTE was fighting for the liberty of the Tamil community and the next election would be held under a separate Eelam state by Prabhakaran, he said.

The UNP should disclose facts as to their plans to form a government in collaboration with this Tamil Alliance which has become a puppet of the LTTE today, he said.

"At this General Election, people have to take a key decision whether they vote for the elephant as usual to divide the motherland on the demands of Eelam separatists by digging the graves of our children," he said.
