JVP should apologise from people for the crimes they committed - Vajira Abewardena by Ananda Kannanagara in Karandeniya The Galle District UNP candidate Vajira Abewardana asked how the JVP could talk about peace without begging for people's pardon for the crimes they committed during 1971, 88 and 89 terror periods. He was addressing an election rally at Karandeniya on Tuesday last week. He said that the younger generation was unaware of what the JVP did and the reign of terror it imposed on the country. If they knew, the JVP would never have been elected to parliament the last time. "Everybody knows that the JVP helped the PA to form a probationary government not to fulfil the aspirations of masses in the country but to destroy the economy further and put the Government into a shameful situation before the world leaders". "They made numerous requests from the PA Government. The Government was caught in a trap. As a result of the pact even the MPs and Ministers in the PA Government clashed against each other over ministerial portfolios and ultimately kept silent. The economy too further collapsed during that short period, he said. "They first tried to grab the power by haunting a democratically elected government in 1971 by killing innocent police and several security personnel. They attacked their families too. Then launched a terror campaign again in 1988. During that time they killed not only important personalities but also ordinary people and religious dignitaries too." "They burnt down shops, houses, Government buildings and destroyed several bridges. They scared people at night and collected thousands of National Identity Cards". "Therefore the people should teach them a good lesson at the December 5 General Elections as they know that if they get more seats it will be the end of the democracy in our country. The economy too will be reduced to zero" he said. |
