Govt. prepared to create mayhem in UNP strongholds says G.L.

by Rodney Martinesz

Former Minister and UNF media spokesman Prof. G.L. Peiris said yesterday that they had credible information of a plan by the government to create mayhem in electorates traditionally favouring the UNP in order to postpone elections in such districts and subsequently hold them deploying the full might of the government.Addressing a media briefing at the official residence of the Opposition Leader, Prof. Peiris also viewed with alarm the statement made by President at an election rally in Tissamaharamaya where she had allegedly exhorted her supporters to kill any person whom they believe were responsible for the murder of PA supporters.

He also noted that this utterance of the President was in violation of Section 100 of the criminal Procedure Code governing the law relating to abetment to murder.

Deputy leader of the UNP Karu Jayasuriya complained of attacks on the homes of party supporters by gangs led by PA politicos particularly in the Gampaha District.

"There are vehicles without number plates roaming around terrorising people and we fear that the stage is being set to rob the people of their vote".

PA dissident S.B. Dissanayake spoke of attempts to cause a commotion at the UNF meeting in Hanguranketha and stage an assassination against him and other UNP leaders in the guise of a threat to the life of the President.

He was referring to the UNF's forced postponement of its rally on the 20th in Hanguranketha after the President decided to hold the PA's own election rally three miles away form their venue knowing very well of the UNF rally was to be staged on the same day. Dissanayake warned that if the President or Anura Bandaranaike carry out their threat to hold on to power in spite of the verdict of the people on the 5th they would hound out Chandrika from the country similar to the way Marcos of Phillipines was ousted by people power.

"We have the strength to mobilize such a campaign", he said.
