Ports and Shipping Deputy Minister Reggie Ranatunga was released yesterday on bail by Gampaha High Court Judge Ranjith Silva stating that a person who has held such high office cannot be remanded on contradictory evidence. He was released on bail of Rs. 15,000 on the condition that he reports to the Gampaha police station on the last day of every month with two sureties. Senior Counsel Tirantha Walaliyadde who appeared for Mr. Ranatunga clarified that this arrest was made on political overtones. Mr. Ranatunga was remanded based on the evidence submitted by Jayantha Jayasuriya, an Udugampola resident. Mr. Jayasuriya had later told the post mortem that he was pressurised by UNP supporters to give evidence against Mr. Ranatunga in the Lionel Rodrigo Murder Case so that the UNP could obtain unfair political advantage which Mr. Jayasuriya later confessed. |
