Lanka gains place in World Bank distance learning network Sri Lanka is poised for a major breakthrough in distance learning. The World Bank funded Distance Learning Center (DLC) a most modern state of the art technology for conducting training and technical skills development courses at managerial level will become operational in Colombo in January 2002. This is a project initiated by President Chandrika Bandaranaike Kumaratunga to strengthen the environment for promoting competency in the public and private sectors through access to global knowledge using the most upto date electronic tools and communication equipment, said Armyne Wirasinha, Chairman of Distance Learning Center Ltd which is a fully owned Government company managed and operated jointly with the private sector. The project will enable both public and private sector managerial level personnel to participate in state of the art learning and knowledge sharing interactive programs through distance learning which will be linked to over 55 countries serviced by World Bank. This Global Distance Learning Network (GDLN) is being created a harness the latest technology in the fight against poverty through a series of carefully designed policy programs, using interactive video, electronic classrooms, satellite communication and the Internet. GLDN will bring courses, seminars and discussions from many global sources to participants around the world. The company will provide in service training and shortterm training for middle and top level managers in public and private organizations in Sri Lanka. The Company will target its programmes at the civil service (both at the cental and provincial levels) the private sector and the financial sector. The target group would be decision makers and persons in authority in the central government, Public Corporations, Government owned companies, Statutory Boards, Provincial Councils and the entire spectrum of the private sector. |
