Economy in peril, if UNP wins - President

Jatila Karawita reporting from Hanguranketha

President Chandrika Bandaranaike Kumaratunga addressing a PA election rally at Poramadulla Central College grounds firmly stressed that as long as she was the head of State she would not allow the UNP-led reactionary forces to destroy the country's economy which is currently on a solid footing.

President Kumaratunga said the people would have to decide the fate of the country on two very serious issues at the December 5 election.

Firstly, she said, that if the people vote for the UNP then that would be an endorsement given to UNP leader Ranil Wickremesinghe who has secretly entered into a pact with the LTTE to hand over Eelam.

President Kumaratunga advised the people of the Nuwara Eliya district and in particular, Hanguranketha to reject the former PA Minister S. B. Dissanayake and company who have played out Samurdhi funds to the tune of over Rs. 950 million.

"Is the so-called United National Front trying to form a government with corrupt elements", she queried.

The President in her speech also described vividly how the PA managed to erase the tag of the flesh-eating hand after they assumed power in 1994.

She said today the PA is keen to establish Parliamentary democracy sans abductions, rape, and disappearances etc.

She called on the people to be with her government for the present cost of living but assured the people that development on an unprecedented scale will be continued after the polls.

The President also did not fail to mention that all public servants and government teachers could expect more salary hikes under her PA administration come 2002.

President urged the people lastly, to give her a government which, she could work towards securing the country's territorial integrity and further develop the economy so be the best in South East Asia.

"I ask the people of Hanguranketha and the rest of the country to elect the PA Government go another term.

"This only the PA that is able to overpower Ranil and LTTE and further enhance the economic benefits of the country.

"If not it will be an irrevocable mistake which the future generations will stand to repent," President emphasised.
