US Congressman thanks Lanka From Walter Jayawardena in Los Angeles "Please know that I am aware of the many atrocities that have been perpetrated in Sri Lanka by terrorists and I know that you understand the grief and sadness of the American people at this difficult time," said Congressman Henry Hyde. The powerful US Congressman who is the Chairman of the Committee on International Relations of the United States House of Representatives was replying to the expression of the sympathy and the condolence extended by President Chandrika Bandaranaike Kumaratunga and high ranking members of the Sri Lankan Government on the tragedy of the loss of thousands of lives in the terrorist attack on September 11. In a letter addressed to Dr. Warnasena Rasaputram, the Sri Lankan Ambassador in Washington DC, the very influential Congressman in foreign relations in the United States said that he very much appreciated the expression of sympathy of the Sri Lankan President and the other high ranking members of the Sri Lankan Government. He said that he was heartened by the fact that Sri Lanka would stand with the United States as it was launching a concerted international effort to root out terrorism from the face of the Earth. In this reply, he told President Kumaratunga that he was sharing her view that we must redouble our efforts to monitor terrorist front organisations and other activities designed to raise funds to commit heinous crimes against humanity. "Thank you again for your thoughtful letter and your condolences during this extraordinary difficult period of the American people," he concluded. |
