Minister Mahinda Rajapakse meet trade union reps Ports, Shipping and Fisheries Minister Mahinda Rajapakse since assuming duties in his new portfolio met for the first time representatives of 30 Trade Unions affiliated to Sri Lanka Ports Authority and the Sri Lanka Shipping Corporation on September 25th. All the Trade Union delegates thanked the Minister for affording them the opportunity to meet him within one week of his assuming duties and expressed their appreciation of bringing under one Ministry the two inseparable subjects of Ports and Shipping and continued to explain the shortcomings, weaknesses and irregularities prevalent within their institutions. The Minister in reply assured them that he would never allow to privatize any of the property relating to the shipping industry in the future and added that instead of wasting time over the past sins he expects everybody concerned to come up with positive suggestions and plans and to cooperate in implementing them in order to bring the Ports and the Shipping Corporation up to an international standard in keeping with the time. MP Bharatha Lakshman Premachandra, the President of Sri Lanka Independent Employees' Union of Ports Authority in his address pledged support for all activities that will be taken by the Minister towards the progress of the shipping industry. Ministry Secretary S. Amarasekera, Ports Authority Chairman Admiral Mohan Samarasekera, Managing Director D. Godage and Additional Managing Director H.A.D.S. Premachandra were present on the occasion. |
