'Do not act without consulting me', Speaker tells IGP Having considered the report of the inquiry into the action of the Police on July 16, 2001 where senior Police Officers manning the entrances to the Parliamentary precincts at Sri Jayawardhanapura Kotte, had prevented Members of Parliament from entering the Parliament premises in their vehicles, Speaker Anura Bandaranaike has informed the Inspector General of Police Lucky Kodituwakku that hereafter under no circumstances should the Police act in a similar manner without prior consultation with him. The letter sent by the Speaker to the IGP says that at the inquiry the Police had maintained that they acted in that manner to prevent a possible breach of peace and damage to Parliamentary property. The Speaker's letter further said: "As the Speaker of Parliament and as the custodian of the Parliamentary Rights and Privileges of all Members of Parliament, it is my bounden duty to safeguard their interests. "Please ensure that these directions are strictly observed and that there are no repetitions of such incidents in the future." |
