British Visa fees up

Due to the change in the Rate of Exchange the costs of a British Visa will increase with effect from Monday October 1. The new fees are as follows:

Standard Visa - Rs. 4,455, 1 Year Multiple Visa - Rs. 7,425, 2 Year Multiple Visa - Rs. 8,775 and Settlement Visa - Rs. 32,400.

A full list of the Visa Fees is obtainable from the Visa Section of the British High Commission.

Media unions condemn dismissal of photo journalist

Journalists associations were yesterday up in arms over the dismissal of Press Photographer Buddhika Weerasinghe by Sumathi Newspapers, apparently because he gave an interview to another newspaper. The Free Media Movement, the Sri Lanka Working Journalists Association and the Federation of Media Employees Trade Unions, who are taking up his case said in a press release yesterday that such acts can lead to devastating effects.

Weerasinghe was one of the newsmen assaulted by men of the Presidential Security Division in July 15, 1999 when they were covering an Opposition rally. He had spoken to a journalist of a Sinhala weekend newspaper who published the conversation as an interview which is believed to be the cause for his dismissal, a joint press release by the three unions said.

Thirteen fishermen freed from Indian jail

The Solidarity of National Fisheries said yesterday that 13 Sri Lankan Fishermen detained for more than 10 months in South India in the Madurai Central Prison, Tamil Nadu, India were discharged on September 25 and that they are now stationed at Tharmal Nagar Police Station, Tuticorin, pending deportation. The vessels are reported to be badly dilapidated.

The 13 fishermen and vessels discharged have been identified as Joseph Titus of Akhila, Jerard of Wasanaduwa, Susil Prasanna of Sisira, W.H.Fernando of Kumari Marine, Ranjith Lal Viyani of Rethaputha, Malcolm Nicholas of St.Jerald, W.Jude Fernando of Salakumari, Dixon Fernando of Luxmanputha, A.W.Charles Dayasiri of Nandani, Kingsley Lawrence Ravi of Akisputha(KLP-83), Sunil Shantha of Subani Sanitha(KAK-1), Newton Leslie of KAK-2 and Antony Jerit of Akesh Putha(KAK-11).All had been arrested between November 1999 and March 2001.

Child Rights Poster exhibition

Lawyers for Human Rights and Development (LHRD), an NGO engaged in social welfare activities have organised a poster exhibition on `Child Rights' for the fifth consecutive year to mark the Universal Children's Day on October 1.

This exhibition will be held at the Public Library Auditorium from October 3 to 5. The exhibition is open to the general public from 10.30 am to 5.00 pm on October 3 and daily from 8.30 am to 5.00 pm on October 4 and 5. Probation and Child Care Commissioner T. Asoka Perera will open the exhibition on October 3 at 10.00 am.

LHRD also conducted an essay and poster competition to mark the Universal Children's Day and awards will be presented to the winners of these competitions on October 6 at 10.30 am at the Public Library Auditorium, Colombo with the presence of Supreme Court Judge H. S. Yapa.

Ten new Samaneras ordained to mark 137th birth Anniversary of Anagarika Dharmapala

In commemoration of the 137th Birth Anniversary of the late Founder of the Mahabodhi Society, Srimath Anagarika Dharmapala, 10 young virtuous buddhist children were ordained as Buddhist novice monks before the Jaya Sri Maha Bodhi of Isipathana, Benaras, India under the patronage of Rev. Dr. Dodamgoda Revatha Nayaka Thera, the Secretary General of the All India Mahabodhi Society, recently.

The religious ceremony was organized by Srimathi Karunaratne of Pannipitiya, Piyal Jayatilleke of Polgasowita and N.G. Fonseka of Kalutara with the participation of about 250 devotees from Sri Lanka and a large number of foreign laymen and members of the Buddhist Clergy from various countries including India.

The ten Samaneras were named Ven. Khema, Ven. Assaji, Ven. Muditha, Ven. Maithri, Ven. Kassapa, Ven. Mahinda, Ven. Paduma, Ven. Nalaka, Ven. Kolitha and Ven. Asanga, after ordination.
