The severe drought that prevailed in the Kandy district for more than four months has ended with intermittent heavy showers that are being experienced in the district now. The Municipal Council has restored its 24 hour water supply in the city. Farmers and owners of vegetable gardens are very busy preparing their fields and gardens as water is now available in plenty in streams, channels and rivers. The water level in the Mahaveli river is rising gradually. The dried up wells are getting filled. There has been no plucking of tea leaf in most of the tea smallholdings and tapping on rubber estates is at a standstill due to heavy showers. Nuwara Eliya district and the catchment areas in particular are experiencing heavy rains with occasional strong winds, and if the present rainy season continues for weeks, as appreciable high levels in the country's major reservoirs situated in the Nuwara Eliya could be reached, the present power cuts too could be gradually be reduced, said a certain high ranking officer of the Sri Lanka Electricity Board. According to the Senior Planters in the district expressed their satisfaction with the onset of rains, and they expect high tea productions including quality teas. In the Maskeliya, Bogawanthalawa, Randenigala areas including Kotmale continuous rains were being experienced at the moment.
