Assault on schoolboys: court seeks medical reports

The Maligakanda Magistrate and Additional District Judge Mrs. Sarojani Weerawardena yesterday directed police to forward to court an documents including medical reports in the case in which Arjuna Ranatunga and his brother Provincial Councillor Prasanna Ranatunga have been named among other suspects in connection with the allege assault on school boys of Asoka Vidyalaya, Maradana.

The seven suspects who were alleged to have attacked the students were directed to appear in court on December 7.

The other five suspects are Nishantha Priyadharsana, Nihal Silva, Rasika Dharnaratne, Chandana Prasanna and Prasanna Gunasekera. Prasanna Gunasekera (22) of Kosgoda was arrested earlier by Chief Inspector R. A. Edirisinghe, OIC Maradana Police in the Court compound immediately when he was identified by the students.

State Counsel Priyantha Nawanna yesterday told court that the dossier of the investigations had been forwarded to the Attorney General and his reply was awaited for filing charges.

G. G. Y. Keerthiratne who watched the interests of the victims and the witnesses in the case said that one of the students who was injured during the attack had obtained treatment from the Mental Hospital. The student is still suffering from the head injuries, the Counsel told court.

Earlier four suspects were produced before an identification parade held by Acting Magistrate Lloyd Grey. Two suspects Rasika Dharmaratne and Chandana Prasanna were identified by students of Asoka Vidyalaya, as the persons who assaulted them on the day of the incident.

The other two suspects who were produced before the parade were Nishantha Priyadharsana and Nihal Silva. The suspects were earlier granted bail in Rs. 2,500 and a bond of Rs. 25,000 with a surety each, and warned not to interfere with the witnesses.

The principal of Asoka Vidyalaya M. D. Gunadasa, several teachers, parents and old boys of the Asoka Vidyalaya were also present to hear the proceeding in a packed Court house yesterday.

Colombo DIG Gerard Ignatius is directing investigations conducted by Senior SP D. A. de Fonseka assisted by Chief Inspector A. R. Edirisinghe, OIC, Maradana Police, Inspector Priyanka Wijenayake, OIC, CDB, with SI Nimal Perera and Sergeant P. Seneviratne.

Kalinga Indatissa, Hemaka de Alwis, Hemantha Gamage, Asela Rekawa and Mohan Wijesinghe appeared for the suspects. G. G. Y. Keerthiratne, U. L. Newton Uswatte, P. Wijeratne and Gunasiri Kodituwakku watched the interests of the victims and the witnesses in the case.
