Forestry detections during the past 6 months exceeded 1600 bringing in a total revenue of Rs. 35 million Agriculture, Forestry, Food and Co-operative Development Minister D. M. Jayaratne, said on assuming duties at the State Timber Corporation where officers of the Department of Forest Conservation had gathered to welcome him. The Department was able to earn 57 million rupees by way of fines during the whole of the previous year, the Minister said. He said that he expected the officers to conduct systematic raids with proper coordination to enforce the laws strictly and bring the culprits to book. Such as the confiscation on of vehicles, imprisonment up to one year and fine up to one hundred thousand rupees, should be sought he said. Ministry Secretary Ananda Gunasekera, Forest Conservation Director General H.M. Bandarathilaka and State Timber Corporation Chairman W.M.P. Leelananda Silva also addressed the gathering.
