Nearly 200 abandoned lakes and tanks located in the Southern district will be rehabilitated under a special program scheduled to be implemented by the Southern Development Authority shortly. The main objective of this program which is carried out under the instructions of Public Administration, Home Affairs, Provincial Council, Local Government and Southern Development Minister Dr. Richard Pathirana is to provide necessary water for agricultural purposes and other needs in the Southern District during droughts. If we had implemented the programs of this nature a long time before we would have not faced such a critical situation where the country had to undergo numerous hardships due to the non availability of water in some areas in the past two months, Minister Dr. Pathirana told the Daily News. Minister Pathirana also said that arrangements have already been made to implement this program very shortly with the assistance of area Divisional Secretaries attached to all Divisional Secretariats in the Southern District. I have already instructed relevant authorities in the District to commence the work on about ten abandoned lakes and provide water to farmers for their agricultural purposes. Dr. Pathirana also instructed the SDA to purchase a few water bowsers to be used in the future. |
