Colombo Plan receives U.S. $ 200,000 from American Government to fight drug abuse

The Colombo Plan has received U.S. $200,000 from the Government of the United States to help fund the Plan's Drug Advisory Program's (DAP) assistance to member countries in their efforts to combat drug abuse. The funds were conveyed to Dr. U. Sarat Chandran, Secretary General of the Plan, by American Charge Lewis Amselem at a handing-over ceremony in the American Embassy.

The $200,000 will be used in such areas as Enhancement of Life Skills in Drug Abuse Prevention, Family Counseling Amphetamine Type Stimulants Research and the Fifth Conference on the Asian Federation of Therapeutic Communities, among other activities. The DAP will also continue to enhance the skills of officials engaged in reducing drug demand throughout the region., as affirmed most recently at the Colombo Plan Consultative Committee Meeting held in Colombo July 2-4 of this year.

During the ceremony, Mr. Amselem said, "The Drug Advisory Program has been playing an important role in the efforts of member countries to tackle the global drug problem, which has many aspects, including organized crime, terrorist activities and human trafficking."

Dr. Chandran added, "We very much appreciate the continued support of the United States Embassy in Colombo and the State Department's Bureau for International Narcotics and Law Enforcement Affairs. The United States was the initiator of the Drug Advisory Program of the Colombo Plan and has been its major donor since its inception in 1973. The many activities made possible by this funding and by DAP's initiatives in combating drug abuse in the region have been greatly appreciated by the member countries of the Colombo Plan. The Drug Advisory Program remains committed to the development of effective drug abuse prevention and treatment strategies and programs to support member countries in preventing their younger generation from succumbing to drug abuse."
