The Land Commissioner's Department of North Central Province is conducting a survey to ascertain the extent of unauthorized settlements of Land on Government Reservations within the town of Anuradhapura. The objective of the survey is to confer a status of legal possession to the unauthorized settlers if the lands occupied by them have not been used for improper activities. A similar programme conducted earlier under a Presidential Land Task Force has been abandoned for a variety of reasons, officials said. President Chandrika Bandaranaike Kumaratunga ordered the current Survey under the instructions of NCP Chief Minister Berty Premalal Dissanayake with the cooperation of Road Development Authority, Irrigation Department, Railway Department, Anuradhapura Urban Council and the Divisional Secretariats. Government Land Reservations are being occupied by unauthorized settlers of whom a handful hold the lands under Development Licences issued for specific purposes of residential, industrial or commercial activities. Over the years disputes of possession pertaining to these lands, had arisen. Under the ongoing program unauthorized occupants have been registered on material furnished by themselves and the lands occupied will be classified under various categories based on information provided. Those occupying lands of special reservations will be ejected and provided with alternative lands. |
