PA-JVP talks on Constitutional Council The on-going joint talks between the Janatha Vimukthi Peramuna (JVP) and the People's Alliance (PA) with regard to the setting up of the proposed Constitutional Council will be held later this evening (Sep 17), a communique from the JVP said. The 17th Amendment to the Constitution must be legislated by September 24 according to the PA-JVP agreement and the Constitutional Council will pave the way for the formation of the four Independent Commissions on Public Service, Judiciary, Elections and the Police. A meeting between the PA-JVP delegations in this regard was also held at the President's House on September 14 at 8.30 p.m. between Prime Minister Rathnasiri Wickremanayake, Ministers Nimal Siripala De Silva, Batty Weerakoon, Sarath Amunugama, and Raja Collure. The JVP delegation comprised its Propaganda Secretary and its Parliamentary Group Leader Wimal Weerawansa, and MP Nandana Gunathileke. The two parties discussed issues concerning the setting up of the proposed Constitutional Council at length. They also discussed how the support of the UNP could be obtained since the Bill has to be passed by a two thirds majority in the House. The subsequent establishment of the four Independent Commissions was also discussed. The round of meetings between the JVP and the PA seeks to evolve a consensus on the composition of the proposed Council and the abolition of the Executive Presidency, the communique said. |
