Dance recital on completion of 25 years of Natya Kala Mandhir

by M. Katpatharajah

The students of "Natya Kala Mandhir" headed by the veteran dance teacher 'Kalasuri' Vasugy Jegatheeswaran will present several dance performances on Saturday 22nd September 2001 at New Kathiresan Hall to mark the completion of its 25 years of successful existence.

Mr. K. C. Kamalasabaysm, Attorney General will be the chief guest. Mr. D. Eeswaran and Kambavaruthy E. Jeyaraj will be the guests of honour.

'Natya Kala Mandhir' has served all the committees in the field of Bharatha Natyam very splendidly and now it is growing majestically and stands today not merely an institution but also as a resilient tradition and indomitable spirit destined to remain strong and sound for millenniums.

Smt. Vasugy Jegatheeswaran nee Shanmugampillai began to master the intricate art of Bharatha Natyam at the very tender age of 3, under the expert guidance of her mother, the late Smt. Vijayalkshmi Shanmugampillai. Having completed her academic education, she took wings to India to acquire the knowledge of various dance forms of Bharaha Natyam under well respected and acclaimed Gurus like Gowry Muthukumarasamy, Tanjore Smt. Jegathambal, Padmasri Adyar K. Lakshmanan, Smt. Shantha Dhananjayan and Kalaimani S. K. Rajaratnam. She was awarded Bharatha Choodamani and Diploma in Dancing and Nattuvangam.

Vasugy also presented 22 of her talented and experienced students of "Natya Kala Mandhir" before an international audience at the dance recital choreographed and produced by her to mark the "Guru Purmma" day this year at the Holy City of "Pootapathy" of Andrapradesh in India. This Vasugy considers the greatest privilege as both the artistes and she received the great blessings of "Baghvan" Sri Sathya Sai Baba.

Smt. Vasugy Jegatheeswaran has paved the path to 56 of her students to their successful debut (Arangetram). This bears sufficient testimony of her contribution to the development of this intricate art.

She has been conferred with several honours like Kalasuri, Bharatha Bhooshanathilakam, Narthana Nayagi, Nadana Kalai Arasi, Kalai Chammal, Nadana Kalai Arasi and Ratna Deepa for her excellent performance and enormous contributions to propagate this divine dance form.
