Two veteran Lankan hoteliers appointed to HCIMA global network

Dr. Chandi Jayawardena, a Visiting Professor of the Ryerson University Toronto, Canada, who is the HCIMA Ambassador for the Caribbean and South America Zone and Saman Rajapakse, General Manager of the Villa Ocean View Hotel, Wadduwa and Immediate Past Chairman of the Sri Lanka International Group of the HCIMA have been honoured by the parent body in UK for their distinguished services in promoting the HCIMA Mission of promoting "Hospitality Management Excellence" internationally.

Dr. Jayawardena has been elected a Member of the International Council of the HCIMA, UK and Vice Chairman of its International Development Committee. Saman Rajapakse has been appointed HCIMA Ambassador for the South East Asia Zone, and as a Member of the International Development Committee (IDC).

The HCIMA in UK and operating in more than 100 countries through its International Groups with a total membership exceeding 23,000 professionals, is the world's leading such organisation for the hospitality industry.

The HCIMA improves professional standards in the hospitality industry. The Association's global influence brings together individuals from all sectors of the hospitality industry - hotels, contract catering, restaurants, fast food, pubs, hospitals, armed forces, education and the teaching profession. It gives members the competitive edge and helps them to succeed in their careers and business. The HCIMA recently appointed International Ambassadors to eleven identified zones of the world to promote the Association's work.

Dr. Jayawardena who was appointed for the Caribbean and South America Zone was the Founder Chairman of the HCIMA Sri Lanka Chapter and of the Jamaican Chapter. He is actively involved in HCIMA operation worldwide and plays an important role in promoting hospitality professionalism globally. The HCIMA has nominated him for "The International Achievement Award".

Dr. Jayawardena is an academic and practitioner. Before taking up his appointment at Ryerson University, he was a Research Fellow and a Senior Lecturer in Tourism Management of the University of West Indies (UWI) Mona Campus, Jamaica. He holds Visiting Professorships in Tourism Marketing at the University of Guyana and the International Hotel Management Institute of Switzerland. He is also an Associate Professor in Hospitality Management at the International Management Centres (IMC) of UK.

Saman Rajapakse appointed for the South East Asia is one of the Founder Members of the Sri Lanka Chapter. His association with the HCIMA goes back to 1977, initially as a Student Member and in course of time was awarded his Fellowship.

During his three year term in office as Chairman, the Sri Lanka International Group made noteworthy progress in terms of Membership Development, Professional Development, Public Relations and Social Activities and was cited as a "Model Overseas Group" by the parent body in UK.

Now in his honorary capacity as the HCIMA Ambassador responsible for countries such as Hong Kong, Singapore, Malaysia, Thailand and other Asian countries, he is as enthusiastic as ever of propagating the HCIMA Philosophy of Management Professionalism in the Hospitality Industry and further widen the horizons of this vast organisation.
