Cicada to root out on stage
NATANDA Dance Theatre of Sri Lanka will present its 10th annual
contemporary dance production Cicada, choreograph by Kapila Palihawadana
at the Nugaya Open Air Theatre at Sri Lanka Foundation Institute on
March 21 and 22 at 7.30pm.
This performance will bring 15 Tamil participants from Batticaloa who
are members of Prof. Maunuguru´s Theatre Lab. Members of nATANDA
MalithUpendra, Dakshika Bandara, Kalani Sachththar and DilanChathuranga
have being traveling to Batticaloa with the artistic director of nATANDA
Kapila Palihawadana to conduct contemporary dance workshops for these
young talented male dancers.
They have studied Kooththu dance tradition and some of the
participants have studied Bharatha Natyam as well. This is their first
time exposure to the contemporary dance.
nATANDA has being working with the Tamil community for several years
and several dance projects. nATANDA´s latest dance production Cicada is
another project which is focusing on reconciliation and peace building
in the country and connecting with each and everyone in the community.
Cicada is a tiny creature and colloquially known as the locust (r?siya)
found in both temperate and tropical climates.
The characteristic feature of the Cicada is that they live
underground as nymphs feeding on root juice. When they are ready to
become adults they construct an exit tunnel and emerge into the surface.
They shed their skin on a nearby bark emerging as young adults and
into the season. One can easily recognize it with its large prominent
eyes set wide apart on its head, on the sides with veined wings and has
a translucent body. nATANDA's new production is centered around this
tiny creature and the changing seasons which embrace all living beings
on this earth.
Cicada is in collaboration with Theatre Lab of Prof Maunuguru
Batticaloa and is sponsored by The Prince Claus Fund for Culture and
Developments (Netherland). It’s also friendly supported by Geothe
Institute, Sri Lanka Foundation Institute and Nelung Arts Center.
