Wild animals eating crops

Wild animals are affecting cultivations in Matara and Hambantota districts, farmers complain.

According to residents, monkeys, giant squirrels, apes, wild boars and peacocks tread these districts and are affecting people's livelihoods.

Monkeys and apes jump on rooftops from tall trees and break roofing tiles and asbestos sheets.

Coconut, jak, papaw, cashew, fruit and vegetables are being consumed.

Giant squirrels drink up young coconuts and king coconuts and destroy the harvest, farmers say.

These wild animals often bite innocent people, they added.

This matter was brought to the attention of wildlife authorities but no measures are taken yet.
