LAW STUDENT'S arm amputation:
GMOA wants transparent inquiry
The Government Medical Officers' Association (GMOA) requested health
authorities to conduct an impartial and transparent investigation into
the incident of the amputation of a hand of a final year female law
student.
Meanwhile, Health Ministry sources said the special committee
appointed by Health Ministry Secretary Dr Nihal Jayatilleke to conduct
an inquiry into the amputation of the left hand of the the female law
student are continuing with investigations.
It was earlier reported that the patient had repeatedly complained
that the plaster cast on her hand was too tight but the medical staff
attached to Matara Hospital had given her strong pain killers instead of
loosening or removing the plaster. Doctors at Colombo National Hospital
decided to amputate her hand after coming to the conclusion that all
nerves in her hand were dead.
She is left handed and was to sit for her final exams in June.
