He was speaking at a ceremony to lay the foundation stone for a new building for an elders home in Matugama last week.

The new building costing Rs seven million will be constructed in memory of Anil Moonesinghe.

The expenditure will be borne by his wife and his children.

Speaker Rajapaksa said: “We are living in an era where children are dumped on the roadside and the young neglect their parents and elders.

"Mrs Moonesinghe and her children have done an exemplary deed by making arrangements to construct a building for an elders home in Matugama which is an urgent need. It is difficult to find politicians of the calibre of Anil Moonesinghe.”

Transport Minister Kumara Welgama, Deputy Highways Minister Nirmala Kotalawala and Western Provincial Councilors Chandrabanu Adikaram and Keerthi Kariyawasam also participated. Anil Moonesinghe's son, Praveen delivered the vote of thanks
