Badulla Catholic Diocese chalk 40
The Catholic Diocese of Badulla will register 40 years in service to
the Catholic church today. Before the formation of the Badulla Diocese
both, the Badulla and Monaragala Districts formed part of the Kandy
Diocese.
On December 18, 1972 the Holy See created a new diocese of the
Catholic church of Sri Lanka in Badulla and the then Kandy Bishop, the
late Most Rev. Dr Leo Nanayakkaea OSB was assigned as the first Bishop
of Badulla.
When the Badulla Diocese fell vacant with the passing away of the
incumbent bishop the Vatican appointed the Auxiliary Bishop of Colombo
the late Most Rev. Dr. Edmund J. Fernando OMI as the second bishop of
Badulla. With the retirement of Bishop Fernando, His Lordship Most Rev.
Dr. Winston Fernando SSS was appointed to the diocese as the third
bishop.
There will be a Thanks Giving Holy Mass today at 9.00 am presided
over by the present prelate. All are welcome to join the Holy Mass and
fellowship.
