Afghanistan Foreign Minister Dr Zalmai Rassoul will arrive in Sri
Lanka today on a four-day official visit on External Affairs Minister
Prof G L Peiris’ invitation.
He will be accompanied by senior ministry officials, External Affairs
Ministry sources said.
The two Foreign Ministers will discuss bilateral relations between
the two countries and exchange views on regional and international
issues of common interest.
An agreement in the fields of economic, educational, scientific and
technical cooperation will also be signed.
The Afghan Foreign Minister will call on President Mahinda Rajapaksa
and also meet Economic Development Minister Basil Rajapaksa and Defence
and Urban Development Ministry Secretary Gotabhaya Rajapaksa.
The visiting minister will deliver a public lecture on ‘Afghanistan
today and beyond 2014’ tomorrow at the External Affairs Ministry.
The Foreign Minister is also scheduled to visit the Southern
Province.
This visit is expected to mark a new chapter in Afghanistan and Sri
Lanka relations, External Affairs Ministry sources said.
Prior to his appointment as Foreign Minister in 2010, Dr Rassoul
served as National Security Advisor of Afghanistan from June
2002-January 2010.
