Girl’s murderer commits suicide

Kuchchuweli Police commenced an investigation into the death of an eight year old girl who had been murdered by slashing her neck at Thiriyana on Sunday by a man who committed suicide after the crime.

Police identified the victim as G Pulendran of ward 5, Thiriyaya. The suspect, a neighbour of the deceased had drunk poison and died at Kuchchuweli hospital on the same day.

Investigations are continuing.

Thief arrested

Mount Lavinia Police on Sunday arrested a suspicious person with Rs 318,000 in his possession and interrogation from him revealed that he had stolen it from a filling station in Kataragama.

He was handed over to Kataragama Police for further investigations.

Wife nabbed over husband’s death

A woman who had allegedly killed her husband by assaulting him with a mammoty was arrested by Thambalagamuwa Police on Sunday. Police led investigations after the post-mortem of the deceased, K Sudakaran, 46, who succumbed to his injuries at Kandy hospital while being treated for severe head injuries.

The victim had been admitted to the Kandy hospital on September 25 and his wife had told the hospital that the injuries were due to a fall. The injured man died two days later and his post-mortem report had stated the cause of death was due to severe head injuries caused by a heavy blow from a hard object. The report revealed that the injuries could not have happened due to fall.

Police arrested his wife. On interrogation, she revealed that she had assaulted him with a mammoty after a dispute between them when the man came home heavily drunk.

Intercity bus gutted

A private intercity bus was completely gutted after it caught fire at eighth mile post in Demodara on the Badulla-Bandarawela road on Sunday evening.

Only the driver and the conductor were in the bus at the time of the incident and the latter has been admitted to hospital with minor injuries. Ella Police together with Badulla UC fire brigade doused the fire. Ella Police are investigating.

Five acres of forest destroyed in fire

A fire broke out in a government forest reserve in Diddeniya has destroyed more than five acres of forest on Sunday afternoon. The Police, people in the area, forest officers and the disaster management officers in Gokarella managed to bring the fire under control. Gokarella Police are investigating.

Pregnant woman dies while bathing

Hatton Police are investigating the death of a pregnant women whose body and a premature foetus were found at a bathing spot in Hattonwatte on Sunday.

Preliminary investigations revealed that she had faced the mishap when she went to have a bath. S Siwanayagi, 34, Hattonwatte died in the incident.

The body and the foetus have been sent to Navalapitiya hospital for the post-mortem.
