Pirith

The Kelaniya Sri Dharmasoka MMV celebrates its 74th anniversary on October 2. An all-night pirith chanting was held yesterday as pent of a pinkama to mark the occasion. It concludes with a sanghika dana to 150 bhikkhus this morning.

Other highlights of the celebrations include the program of moon meals to inmates at the Biyangama children’s home on October 3 and a literary awards ceremony at the school premises on October 4 said Principal Nimal Jayaweera.


Special Bhajan programme

Satyanarayan Nair from Bhopal, India, a Professional Bhajan and Gazal singer will sing Bhajans at Sai Mandir 22, Barnes Place Colombo 7 on October 4 from 6 p.m to 7.30 p.m and at Sivananda Nilayam Hindu Ladies College, Wellawatte on October 7 from 4.30 p.m to 6 p.m. He is a disciple of Bhajan Maestro Padma Sri Anup Jalota.


Lanka IOC price increase

Lanka IOC increased the price of a litre of diesel by Rs. 4 with effect from yesterday. The new price of a litre of diesel will be Rs. 121, a spokesman for the LIOC said


Public lecture

A public lecture delivered by Prof. Indra de Soysa on the topic of ‘Enter the Dragon! Comparing Chinese and US Arms Transfers to Dictators and Violators of Human Rights’ will be held at the Kadirgamar Institute, “The Lighthouse”, No. 24, Horton Place, Colombo 7 on October 3 from 5 pm to 6 pm.


Death of T. Rudrapathy

The death occurred of T. Rudrapathy,Media Assistant, Ministry of Water Supply and Drainage and former Director of the SLBC Tamil Service.

An active member of the progressive political movement, late Rudrapathy used Tamil programmes as a tool to create a North- South Friendship Bridge in his capacity as SLBC’s Director Tamil Service.

On retirement from the SLBC, he joined the Mdeia Unit of the Water Supply and Drainage Ministry and functioned as a media assistant until his demise. His remains are lying at his residence at Church Road, Chunnakkam, Jaffna. Funeral takes place at the Koththiyalady Public Cemetery on October 3 afternoon.


Farmer dies in jumbo attack

A farmer succumbed to his injuries after an elephant attacked him while he was looking after a chena cultivation in Kebithigollewa on Sunday. The victim was identified as G Gunadasa,52, of Dutuwewa.

Lidamulage Lucien Silva of 268/6, main road, (4th Lane), Attidiya is reported missing from September 16, 2009.

He was fair in complexion with hair combed to a side. He was last seen in a blue shirt.
