Annual Inter-school Shakespeare Drama Competition

When I wrote that Shakespeare should not be localized in the Annual Inter-School Shakespeare Drama Competition, I had no intention of provoking anybody, nor did I criticize or condemn any school or judge.

I have seen Shakespeare at the Globe – and also presented in different modes and languages and enjoyed and appreciate them very much.

I am not against Shakespeare translated into different languages and produced using “an eclectic mixture of costumes and modes.”

This is a great way in which Shakespeare can be introduced to the rest of the world.

The Inter-School competition was however not only for fun and entertainment, it was a contest.

Therefore there should be some uniformity and the norm should be followed. This is just my opinion.

I was not aware that ‘Sinhabahu’ had been translated and produced in English, I am very sorry I missed it. I wonder what costumes they wore.

Bandarawela Cathedral came alive with music

The Cathedral of Christ the Living Saviour certainly came alive on November 5, 2011, when a musical titled “The Church One Foundation” was held from 6.00 to 7.00 pm. This was a programme held primarily to fund the Home of the Ascension at Bandarawela which is a home for destitute elders of all races and religions. The Cathedral certainly became alive. Due to the presence of God and best traditions of Christian music.

It was good to see the children from the two schools founded by the first Bishop of Colombo James Chapman and his wife Frances namely S. Thomas and Bishops singing with Roman Catholic Schools, Holy Family Convent, St Benedict’s College, St Joseph’s College and St Peter’s College and Methodist School and Wesley College. All those directors of music from these schools and the students must be thanked for having made time to practise and to sing in the midst of their end of term and end of the year activities and examinations.

It was stated in the programme that it was a combined schools choir classified not according to schools but according to voices. The Bishop of Colombo must be commended for using the Cathedral in this manner and realizing the dream of Bishop Cyril Abeynaike in making use of the Cathedral to promote music.

The programme itself was well handled and managed.

Unique date

It is rarely we get a chance to write a date in this manner (For ex-11.11.11). Six same numerals. Normally the year is mentioned at the end but some write or print in front. Americans write month at the beginning as if 09/11. Of course, to be perfect the year too should be mentioned as 2011. But some of us do not follow this method.

Does anybody know of an year which had eight same numerals or digits? Exactly nine hundred years ago in the year 1111 (AD) November full date was written as 11.11.1111!

Calido Beach Park needs attention

The Calido Beach Park and its restaurant in Kalutara North is abandoned and left to dilapidation due to the negligence. This park was inaugurated in the late ‘50s and maintained properly to please the public.

As senior citizens we would like to witness its previous grandeur once again.
