'TB Jayah Vidyalaya's name should not be changed'

'The name of T B Jayah Vidyalaya at Slave Island should not be changed since the name denotes a national leader who fought for independence, UPFA MP and Parliamentary Council Member A H M Azwer said.

Azwer said that he already said this to the Western Province Governor and the government. Azwer noted that there are attempts by unknown elements to change this name to Zahira College, Slave Island.

'It was the original name given by Dr Jayah when he inaugurated this school. However this was changed to T B Jayah Vidyalaya to honour him.

"Since the name T B Jayah evokes great feelings among all communities, the government should not agree with the latest attempts to change the name of this school.

'It will be a dishonour to his name and will create unnecessary misunderstandings among the public," he said.
