First year admissions:

Committee to deal with irregularities

The Education Ministry has decided to appoint a committee to deal with irregularities pertaining to the admission of children to Year one classes in government schools, Education Ministry Secretary H M Gunasekera said.

He was addressing a press conference yesterday. The official announcement regarding this matter will be published in newspapers on May 12.

Interviews will be called by relevant schools after calling for applications to Year One classes.

Then the school authority will display the selected names of the children on their school Notice Boards. If anybody has objections he or she can appeal to the Appeal Board which is being implemented at school level.

Anybody who experiences any injustices can appeal to the Appeal Board which is appointed by the Education Ministry Secretary, within two weeks, by registered post, the Ministry Secretary said.

The closing date for applications for year 2011 is June 30, he said.

Education Ministry Assistant Education Director Ven Watinapaha Somonanda Thera and Additional Secretary Hemantha Premathilake also spoke.
