Choristers at Rally Round Christmas.

Thomians take pop to new heights

Be it music from the 70's, the 80's or the early 90's. Whether it is some foot tappers from the golden oldies or trend-setting tunes from a decade back, you are guaranteed a taste of sheer delight as the students of S. Thomas' College, Mount Lavinia, brings give you a musical treat with 'Rally Round Pops'.

The musical extravaganza is set to take place at the College Hall from May 13 to 15 from 7.30 pm. Organized by the Parent Teacher Association of STC, the show will be helmed by multi-faceted dramatist Vinodh Senadeera. 'Rally Round Pops' is slated to comprise a series of some of the most entertaining evenings of song and dance.

A former student of STC, Vinodh and his associate Marlon Jesudason will produce the show and all is being done to ensure that the musical treat is a remembrance for life. Nearly 75 choristers from STC's renowned Canto Perpetua choir are lending their vocals to add flavour to the concert. The audience will get a taste of some of the top hits of the pop era as they are rejuvenated on STC stage in true style.

The concert will feature some of the numero uno singles of the King of Pop, Michael Jackson, Elvis Presley and some trendsetting hits of bands such as Boney M and Abba. The choreography is sure to make the audience skip a heart beat or two as the most intricate dance routines of the era will be brought back to life by the students who have worked tirelessly to give their best to the show. The show is taking place for the fifth time as a sequel to the most successful 'Rally Round' entertainment series of STC. "I have participated in these productions before. To know that I am finally producing it feels awesome," said Marlon.

"It's not easy staging the show but we ensure that we don't compromise on the pop theme at all. Some external artistes have been invited to perform too. Their performance will be a surprise. However, they have been asked to blend into the theme" he added.

"Selecting a theme is always a challenge for me," said the captain of the ship Vinodh. "We zeroed in on the pop theme after much deliberation but now I am glad we did so because the concert is shaping up very well. Students who are performing are extremely talented and the good thing is that this concert gives an opportunity for all the students to take part," he noted.

Magnificent sets resembling the pop era are being erected on the corridors which lead to the hall. Some cut outs of the evergreen pop artistes will ensure the pop mood becomes the talk of the night.

The costumes will entice pop music lovers and the carnival after the concert will ensure that the entertainment of the night exemplifies in grand style.

An ensemble of nearly 600 students of STC storming the stage to present one of the most memorable nights of fun, glamour, dance and mesmeric vocals will be an enchanting sight indeed. Mark it down in your calendar for it will surely be an event which will dazzle the city.
