Over 3,600 power pirates nabbed

The Ceylon Electricity Board (CEB) flying squad nabbed 3,670 persons tapping electricity unlawfully following countrywide raids between June and August, CEB Special Investigation Unit Manager L Senaratna said.

They were fined Rs 42 million and also asked to pay Rs 30 million to the CEB in lieu of the financial loss caused to the Board due to electricity tapping.

The CEB flying squad has been conducting continuous search operations throughout the country to nab power pirates, Senaratna said.

Manipulating electricity meters and getting electricity using hooks have caused an immense loss to the Board.

People who are found guilty will be brought before the courts, he added.
