Desiccated coconut products to recapture Polish market By Ramani Kangaraarachchi
Sri Lanka is to gain access to the EU and Baltic countries for desiccated coconut products through the international market while recapturing the Polish market, said Director, Coconut Development Authority (CDA) H.B. Jayasinghe following his visit to the Polagra Food 2004 trade fair in Poznan, Poland recently. He said that the Polish market was dominated by Sri Lanka in 1997 and 1998 with 7,000-8,000 metric tonnes of coconut products exports annually and later it was reduced to 500 metric tonnes due to various problems. This market went to the Philippines and Indonesia a few years ago. However, it was very encouraging to realise that Sri Lanka not only has the potential to recapture the lost market but also to expand it to EU and Baltic countries where Poland is the biggest. Our objective is to export 10,000 metric tonnes of coconut products annually, he said. Jayasinghe said 50 per cent of the food shelves in supermarkets in Poland are full of confectionery products such as biscuits and chocolates made out of desiccated coconut from the Philippines and Indonesia. However, there was a problem of the taste as those countries produce desiccated coconut with immature nuts whereas Sri Lanka produces them with very good matured coconuts which gives a better taste. The demand was high for Sri Lankan products at the trade fair where 35 countries participated. |
